Floating market Amphawa

Our journey takes us south from Bangkok to Samut Songkhram Province. Depending on the day of the week, you will visit either the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market or the Amphawa Floating Market.

The klongs (canals) were partially dug out or created by diverting rivers and historically served as transport routes to distribute the goods grown and harvested in the area. Today, they are still bustling with activity, and souvenirs are sold along the waterways, supporting the local community.

Right on the klongs, fresh meals are prepared on traditional boats. You can enjoy grilled fish (Phla) in various styles, as well as Pad Thai (fried noodles) or Pad Pak (stir-fried mixed vegetables), offering a true taste of local Thai cuisine.

Train Market

We continue our journey to the Umbrella Back Market, also known as Talad Rom Hub in Thai. The train runs four times a day, and you can watch it either arriving or departing. If time permits, we will try to experience the ride either from the last station into the market or from the station outward.

Your tour guide will walk with you through the market, explaining one or two Thai specialties along the way. You can sample local fruits such as sour or sweet green mango, mangosteen, and lychee, all grown in the region. The market is also known for its dried seafood, including fish and other delicacies, which create a strong, distinctive aroma that is part of the authentic local experience.

Mangrove area

Once in the mangrove area, you will board a traditional longtail boat to explore the extensive mangrove forests that extend out to the sea. Many mangroves have been cleared to create seafood breeding ponds, and along the way, we visit mussel divers in the estuary, depending on the tide.

During the trip, we pass the famous “swimming monkeys”, which have settled in the mangrove forests. With no natural predators and regular feeding by locals, the monkeys are very trusting and sometimes even come into the boat to grab a banana.

From the water and from the land, you will see traditional townhouses on stilts at the estuary. Experience the local way of life along the riverbanks, where residents manage shrimp and mussel farms. The houses are mostly open due to the heat, giving you a unique opportunity to observe daily life up close.

Wat Bang Kung

The temple was originally built during the reign of King Taksin, when he and his soldiers were fighting in Ayutthaya, with the area serving as a navy camp. The temple acted as a spiritual center for the soldiers. In honor of King Taksin, the site was later redesigned and has become a popular destination for locals, who come to celebrate their faith.

Many Chinese visitors can also be seen here, as the camp was historically guarded by Chinese soldiers recruited from various provinces during the Ayutthaya period. The camp was known as Bang Kung Chinese Camp. In the square, visitors can observe cast figures of Muay Thai boxers in various fighting positions, making it a fascinating spot to explore—especially since it is rarely visited by European tourists.

After this intriguing tour, we drive back to Bangkok, returning to the starting point of the tour.
