🍽️ Local Cuisine – Enjoy a delicious selection of authentic Thai dishes, from traditional street food to regional specialties, offering a true taste of Thai culture while exploring this historic area.

Residece of the monks Wat Arun

Our journey takes us to one of the most magnificent temples in Thonburi: Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn. This iconic landmark, famous for its towering prang and intricate decorations made of porcelain and seashells, is one of the most photographed sights in Thailand. As we walk through the temple grounds, you will have time to admire the detailed ornaments, statues and architectural structures that reflect centuries of Thai craftsmanship and Buddhist culture.

After exploring the central temple area, we leave the grounds at the back, where a quieter and more authentic part of Wat Arun awaits you. Here you will see the monks’ living quarters, simple yet remarkable buildings where the temple community goes about its daily routines.Β

Wat Moli Lok Ya Ram Ratchaworawihan

We continue our journey on foot through the narrow streets of Thonburi, where the charm of old Bangkok is still very much alive. As we walk along these small lanes, you will pass the historic Fort Wichai Prasit, an impressive old fortress built during the Ayutthaya period. Its thick walls and strategic riverside location remind visitors of the time when Bangkok was protected by a defensive system of forts along the Chao Phraya River.

If you look inside the complex, you will catch a glimpse of the Wang Derm Palace, once the royal residence of King Taksin the Great, who reunited Siam after the fall of Ayutthaya. Although the palace grounds are today used by the Royal Thai Navy and are therefore not open to the public, the sight of its historic buildings offers a sense of the grandeur and importance this place once held.

Church of Santa Cruz

We continue along the peaceful riverfront until we reach the Kuan Yin Shrine, an old and beautifully preserved Chinese spirit house located directly on the Chao Phraya River. This shrine, dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, is one of the most respected Chinese sanctuaries in Bangkok. Its colourful decorations, incense offerings, and riverfront setting create a spiritual atmosphere that attracts both worshippers and filmmakers. In fact, the shrine is so picturesque that it is frequently used as a backdrop in Thai movies and TV series.

As we walk further, the historical layers of Thonburi become even more visible. After the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, King Taksin the Great rewarded the Portuguese soldiers who fought bravely alongside him against the Burmese with land in this very area.Β

Wat Prayun Wongsawat

Wat Prayoon

Along the riverbank, with a beautiful view of the Chao Phraya, we arrive at Prayurawongsawas Waraviharn Temple, also known as Wat Prayoon or the Turtle Temple due to its charming turtle pond. Before reaching the main Chedi, you pass through a small museum displaying ancient and valuable Buddha relics.

The large white Chedi is particularly striking. It once leaned noticeably to one side and was stabilised using an impressive internal steel support structure. From the express boat, the former tilt can still be clearly seen. Inside, the passageway leading to the exit offers a surprising and memorable experience. After exploring this unique temple, we continue on to our next destination.

Special feauters

The tour itinerary and the individual sightseeing points may vary due to weather conditions, traffic, temporary closures, lighting shutdowns at buildings, airline departure times, or restricted access to certain attractions. In such cases, the responsible tour guide will adjust the programme in consultation with the person who booked the tour. If the tour proceeds with alternative sights, it is still considered fully completed.

Please be aware that appropriate clothing is required when visiting temples. Skirts must cover the knees, trousers must reach the ankles, and shoes must be closed (no flip-flops).

Before entering the ordination hall or Viharn Noi, please remove your shoes and enter barefoot. For hygiene reasons, wearing socks is recommended.

Kindly refrain from sitting on Buddha or Chinese statues for photos, and always respect the temple rules and the Buddhist faith. Women should avoid physical contact with monks and maintain a respectful distance.

A friendly wai greeting will always be appreciated and often returned with a warm Thai smile.
